OCEANIC STUDIOS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FUEL AGENCY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT VICTORIA have created a VR bushfire awareness experience.
Emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) the virtual reality programme was designed to help people make informed, early decisions about what to do when a fire is approaching their property.
"We don't want people to experience a fire in reality," Commissioner Lapsley said. "What we want them to do is to learn from the experience of fire, so the virtual reality option is a fantastic way of doing that."
He said people often struggled to implement fire plans when a fire was approaching because of stress and changing conditions.

People who stayed to defend their properties needed to be aware of what they faced, he said.
"Through this type of technology, they'll be able to see the scenario of what they might be faced against and will make a better decision."
